OVERVIEW

The Routeburn Track is one of New Zealand's nine 'Great Walks', which have been set apart from others due to their incredible scenery. The track winds its way through Fiordland National Park and Mount Aspiring National Park, offering views of amazing wide-stretching mountains, waterfalls, lakes, and natural New Zealand bush.

We begin at the Routeburn Shelter for an easy start to our leisurely day hike. After crossing a swing bridge from the car park, the views get more and more impressive as we gain elevation, with the vegetation changing from grassy flats to beech forest. Keep an eye out for the many birds that call this area home, including the kaka and kea parrots.

We'll stop at the Routeburn Flats Hut for some amazing photo opportunities of the mountains and valleys around us. Those who would like to sit and take in the view are welcome to hang out and eat some lunch.

Anyone interested in pushing another 2.3 km up a steeper section of the track can continue on to the Routeburn Falls Hut. The extra effort is worth it - enjoy the impressive waterfalls and even more stunning views of Mount Aspiring National Park.
