otago peninsula tour

Otago Peninsula and Taiaroa Head is a unique and very special place. It is a place that every visitor to Dunedin should see.

– David Attenborough, BBC

Situated on the East Coast on the Otago Peninsula, Dunedin stands out among others for its young population, extraordinary views, wildlife, and as the home to the steepest street in the world.

The Otago Peninsula is predominantly of volcanic origin, making it quite steep and, on the Pacific Ocean side, very rugged. The harbour side, warm, sunny and sheltered, has a micro climate that is better than anywhere else on the Otago coast. A number of walkways give you access to many breathtaking views and sheer cliff faces like "The Chasm" and "Lovers Leap".

Enjoy the bustling atmosphere of one of the largest cities in New Zealand with a majority population of university students who attend the University of Otago, considered to be one of the world's most beautiful campuses. During the day, visit Baldwin Street for great photo opportunities and to test your stamina - can you make it to the top by foot?

Visit the Larnach Castle near the city's edge for a leisurely stroll featuring impressive architecture and one of only five gardens worldwide to be named a "Garden of International Significance". The castle is also the only one anywhere in Australasia, not to be missed!

Get out of the city for a bit to visit the Otago Peninsula's most famous inhabitants: the Royal Albatross and the Yellow Eyed and Blue Penguins! The peninsula is the only mainland breeding colony for the Royal Albatross as well as the site of the Yellow Eyed Penguin resurgence, brought back from near extinction in recent years. The Blue Penguins are the smallest in the world, weighing only a kilo. Don't leave without seeing these beautiful and unique birds!

The Otago Peninsula, together with its 20 km long harbour, is the home of an abundance of magnificent world famous marine wildlife. You will find many seals, as well as The New Zealand Sea Lion, one of the rarest seal species in the world, the occasional Sea Elephant, and Stewart Island Shags in their natural habitat.
