This course is designed to give you the essential skills to navigate the New Zealand wilderness safely (as well as backcountry all over the world!).  The focus is teaching basic skills for those who plan to spend time on beginner to intermediate level tracks, and some time in the backcountry. We will give you the resources to avoid critical accidents and emergencies, and equips you with basic knowledge to handle one in the rare instance that something occurs.  

 

The course focuses on navigation and basic safety and survival, including minor river crossing safety and basic wilderness first aid. From teaching about modern emergency equipment and how to use it, as well as weather and planning strategies, navigation basics, and how to build a simple shelter or fire, the outcome of this course is ensuring that you understand the advantages and limitations of the gear you have, as well as the basics of safely pursuing outdoor adventures - especially how to avoid accidents and emergencies before they happen.
